The SKA squad enjoyed their best ever results at the Shito-Kai England Invitational Championships on Sunday 29th March 2009 in Gloucester. The squad of 13 won an incredible 12 golds, 6 silvers and 8 bronze.
They wiped the floor in the advanced grade pairs with Chloe and Michael taking the gold, Sian and Ellie won silver and joint bronzes came from Bethany and Louise and Ryan and Edward. In the lower grade pairs Lewis and Graeme won silver whilst Katie and Toni took a bronze. Michael and Clare had a fantastic win in the adult pairs where it proved size doesn’t matter!
The kata teams had equal success with the ‘a’ team (Chloe, Ellie, Sian)winning gold in the final against the ‘b’ team (Bethany, Katie, Louise) who took silver. Toni, Edward and Michael performed their best yet and took a well deserved bronze after loosing to the ‘a’ team in the semi’s.
The individual kata saw Lewis Holmes and Graeme Richardson storm through 4 rounds each to meet in the final. Lewis took the gold and Graeme won silver in the 9yrs and under, up to 6th kyu section. In the 9yrs and under, 5th kyu and above kata, Toni Shering and Michael Holmes also had 5 rounds each. They met in the final where Michael secured gold and Toni won silver.
In the 10 -12yrs kata, Katie Pharo won all 5 of her rounds to take gold in the intermediate section, whilst sister Chloe Pharo won gold in the advanced section. She also had at least 5 rounds. Ellie Barton, Sian Barton and Ryan Beavington failed to medal in this group but all performed well. In the intermediate / advanced section Bethany Scoulding went the furthest and won silver after beating bronze medallist Edward Van Meerkerk in the semi’s. Louise Hicks lost in the first round on a split decision.
Clare Bonello won the female senior kata to take her second gold of the day.
4 of the squad’s golds came from fighting with Lewis Holmes winning his second gold of the day after 4 tough rounds in the 6 yrs and under kumite. Graeme Richardson could not add to his medal collection as he lost in the quarter final in the 8yrs and under beginners kumite. Michael Holmes and Toni Shering were both unstoppable in the 8yrs and under advanced kumite as they both won gold winning many of their fights before the time was up.
In the 9-10yrs kumite Edward Van Meerkerk failed to medal but fought well. The other kumite competitors were all in the 10-12yrs groups. Katie Pharo won a well deserved bronze in the mixed intermediate section whilst Ellie Barton and Bethany Scoulding both took bronzes in the advanced girls section. Chloe Pharo and Louise Hicks both fought well and lost to the finalists in the early rounds. Ryan Beavington was the last fighter of the day and he fought well to take gold in the boys advanced section.
The squad had a brilliant day and a great boost before the Scottish Open Championships! Many of the competitors won more than one medal with Michael taking an incredible 4 golds and Chloe won 3 golds!
Coach Clare was very proud and thanks all of the squad and parents for their continued support! Also thanks goes to Brian Jarvis for hosting the competition which was well run and greatly enjoyed.
