Scottish International Championships 2010

2010-04-17

9yr old Toni Shering bravely entered the Scottish International Championships with no coach and no team mates by her side! She had the opportunity to compete and grasped at the chance to do so! Although many competitors did not make it to the competition due to flight cancellations caused by the volcanic ash, it was still thriving with competitors and the standard was high.

In the kata event, Toni had 4 rounds and for the first time had no coach to advise her what to do. She did her strongest three katas in the first three rounds and won all three 3-0. Unfortunately she met her strongest opponent in the final and Toni opted to do Annan. She now knows she perhaps should have done them in a different order but who knows if the result would have changed. She did well and although she lost the final 3-0 she came away very satisfied with a silver medal.

In her kumite event, Toni was fighting for the first time without a coaches guidance. She scored first with a head kick but her opponent caught up and it went into extra time with a 3-3 score. Toni then received a couple of warnings for contact and went on to loose 0-2. It was unfortunate but Toni was very pleased with her performance and really enjoyed the experience.

Coach Clare said 'I am very proud of Toni for entering the competition all by herself. At only 9yrs old she made the best decisions she could and has learned from the experience. I am pleased she enjoyed her trip and many congratulations to her for winning the silver medal!'
